Revelation 5:2-4

And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside.

Revelation 5:2-4 depicts a scene of the Apostle John’s heightened anticipation of what is to come and the tension in heaven of how this will unfold. A strong angel proclaims with a loud voice asking who is worthy to open the sealed scroll and break its seals. However, no one in heaven or earth, on or under it, is found worthy to open it. John begins to weep loudly at the prospects of an unopened scroll. The prevailing silence that follows, underscores the weight of the moment of the seeming absence of any power capable of enacting God’s final purposes and the deep longing for redemption to move forward. So, what is this scroll?

Clearly, the scroll is not merely a document; it is God's scroll and title deed as a divine certificate that records His sovereign claim, covenant promises, and righteous judgments over creation and every human life. As God's scroll, it bears the authority of heaven—sealed in holiness, written with truth, and opened in His time to reveal His purposes and redemption. As such, it establishes ownership and rights. This scroll documents the inheritance promised to the faithful, the legal standing of Christ as Redeemer, and the settled order by which God governs and restores what was lost to sin. Held by One whose name is above every name, its opening unveils the fulfillment of cosmic justice, the enactment of God’s purposes, and the rightful administration of blessing and judgment. This is to remind believers that every realm ultimately answers to the Creator’s covenantal claim and redemptive sovereignty. Holding both solemn decree and gracious promise, the scroll assures believers that nothing escapes God's notice and that ultimately His justice and mercy will prevail. This then presents another question, “Who will open the scroll and why?”

Coincidentally, the answer is identically found in Revelation 5:2 where the angel does not pose a tentative question about Jesus’ worthiness, but declares, by rhetorical proclamation and definitive recognition of His (Jesus’) divine authority. This imagery of a mighty angel crying out with a loud voice is further underscored by affirmation of an elder of the Lamb in Revelation 5:5 “Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” And ultimately we have to ask ourselves “Why is this?”

Because the answer, as well as our faith is not complex! Jesus’s worthiness was not rooted in human appraisal but in the intrinsic authority of His atoning work of death and resurrection for humanity. Jesus was the lamb, who was and is both fully God and fully man. He entered our broken world yet remained without sin, facing temptation as we do but never yielding. From the beginning he was with the Father, sharing in the divine life and authority. Because of His perfect obedience and righteous worthiness, He alone is able to open the sealed scroll, bringing God’s redemptive purposes to fulfillment, revealing the depths of God's mercy and the mystery of salvation for all who trust in Him. Clearly, Jesus alone has done everything required to be worthy of being handed and ultimately opening the scroll.

Prayerful Thought….

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power forever and ever!” Revelation 5:13
